Sydney Salsa Dance Travel: Day 2
As good as salsa was, it was just a teaser compared to hearing Spanish Harlem Orchestra (the next day) at a huge outdoor stage called “The Domain” as part of the Sydney Festival. Not much could hold up to that. That was simply amazing. I have a video of this, but alas, it might not make it onto the site. I'll try and upload.
I don’t know what I expected when I went, the very next night, to the Spanish Harlem Orchestra as part of the “Sydney Festival”, but I couldn’t have imagined the 100,000 people whom would show up for this event (part of the Sydney Festival). It was packed (understatement), and totally amazing. The band was larger than I remember ever seeing them (probably because this was such a large event) and the sound was really quite good for such a huge outdoor area.
There were a couple of salsa dance shows as well, notably Oliver and Luda, whom are Sydney’s reigning salsa dance couple, 3 time winners of the world salsa championships.
The entire day I had spent recovering from serious jetlag, and “body abuse”, but I had managed to walk for another six hours, and tour a bit of the city by foot. What an absolutely staggeringly beautiful place. Sydney Harbor is amazing! The ferries, the Opera House, the bridges, are all simply fantastic (as my pictures can attest). However, I do seem to have some trouble finding edible food (i.e. food that is not “fast”, and is healthy). Sydney seems to have appalling food choices so far (a strong difference from say, San Francisco), and I can’t understand all the exceptionally athletic bodies that I keep seeing about, when all the food seems so… fattening. Anyway, I walked, and walked, and walked, and then ended at the Sydney Festival. While I was supposed to see another club that night, my strength didn’t hold out, and I was asleep by 10pm (the club started at 11).
Shucks. Sorry for failing you guys, I will get this club next week (provided the Salsa Congress doesn’t do me in).
